About Smoke Craft Lab

Smoke Craft Lab is a small site about offset smokers. I buy the equipment, cook on it, log the temperatures, and publish what the numbers say.

That last part is the reason the site exists. Most smoker reviews are a spec sheet rewritten in friendlier language, sometimes by someone who has never lit the thing. You can tell, because the numbers a cook actually needs are never in there. How far does the temperature drift between the firebox end of the grate and the far end? Does that gap shrink once the steel is fully heat-soaked, or does it stay? How much wood does the thing eat over a ten-hour cook? Manufacturers do not publish this. Most reviewers do not measure it.

So I measure it. The method is written out in full on the How We Test page, and it was written before the first result, on purpose.

Who writes this

Chriss R. I cook on offset smokers and I run the tests you see here. Every measurement on this site comes off equipment I own, in my own yard, using the probes described on the method page.

I am not a competition pitmaster and I am not going to pretend to be one. What I have is patience with a data logger and a willingness to run the same cook eight times before writing anything down.

What you will not find here

No prices. They move weekly, and a stale number is worse than no number, so pricing stays with the retailer where it is current.

No aggregate star ratings. A score out of five, invented by the person earning a commission on the click, is not information.

No sponsored reviews. No manufacturer has paid for coverage here, and none has seen an article before it went live.

How the site makes money

Affiliate commissions. If you buy through a link here, the retailer pays me a percentage and you pay exactly what you would have paid anyway. That is the whole business model, and it is worth saying plainly that it creates a bias: I make money when you buy something.

The only real defence against that bias is publishing the raw measurements, so you can look at the same curve I looked at, disagree with my conclusion, and still walk away with something useful. The full terms are on the Affiliate Disclosure page.
